Oh Boy A Boil!: New Orleans Seafood For A Tasty Lent
New Orleans has deep rooted religious history, and one of the biggest times of the year happens during Lent. Refusing to be boring under the restrictive meal options, Nola instead shines with seafood options for all who celebrate to enjoy. We have wonderful choices right here in Tremé near Rathbone Mansions, and those-along with a few staff and traveler faves-will keep you full and satisfied as we near the end of Lent into Easter.
🦞CRAWFISH🦞
In the thick of it, we are in crawfish season y’all! And Crescent City will have you swimming in it! You won’t have to travel too far from Rathbone Mansions for an excellent seafood boil-we have a wonderful Tremé spot. Cajun Seafood, open 7 days a week, is just a crawfish crawl away from us at 1479 N. Claiborne Ave. Always recommended is also Clesi’s Crawfish at 3835 Tulane Ave, a Mid City spot acclaimed for their seafood (especially crawfish when it’s in season). And no list would be complete without a special mention of traveler favorite Acme Oyster House at 724 Iberville St.-a French Quarter hot spot for great crawfish.
🐠FISH FRY🐠
Feelin’ Fishy on Bourbon? Well, stop on into Pier 424 Seafood Market at 424 Bourbon St. A great fried fish po’boy ought to hit the spot. Hook Catching & Frying will take you out of the madness of French Quarter, and will have two locations (2100 St. Bernard Ave and 1700 Franklin Ave) to enjoy fried fish and other seafood. But we personally always put people on to our neighborhood fish fry spot-The Little People’s Place. Right here in Tremé, and just directly behind us here at Rathbone Mansions, this hole in the wall joint will have a fish fry ready for you all Lent long, and also every Friday all year long!
🐊ALLIGATOR🐊
Get your gator fix at one or both Maspero Restaurants in the French Quarter-Café Maspero at 601 Decatur and Original Pierre Maspero’s at 440 Chartres. Many delicious options for seafood, but we boast their alligator dishes for a little something out of the ordinary. A few streets over at 201 Julia St. we have Mulate’s, a popular Cajun restaurant highlighting a favorite grilled alligator dish.
These are just a few selections from the mountains of seafood dishes and places New Orleans has to offer. So whether you’re looking for a classic boil, blackened fish, or a gator that won’t bite back-fresh and flavorful fish will always be front and center during Lent here in NOLA!
